In Case You Missed It - Summer Events Recap

The summer was a time of home runs in education and networking for the Dayton PMI Chapter. All of you who could attend were a part of really knocking the ball out of the park.

First, the Chapter was honored to have Terry Wheeler as a presenter for a two-part event, ‘Advance Your Career with Strategies and Skills to Manage Workplace Conflicts”.

Wheeler is a partner of the law firm of Artz, Dewhirst & Wheeler but, according to Deb Ranard, the Dayton PMI Chapter VP of Professional Development, his involvement with dispute resolution at Capital University Law School, serving as Co-Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution, Academic Director for the Mediation and Dispute Resolution Program, as well as an Adjunct Professor of Law teaching negotiation, mediation and mediation clinic really make him a ‘class act trainer’.

A former president of the board at the Association for Conflict Resolution, in Washington, DC, Wheeler has been mediating for 34 years. During that time, he had been an active participant in the creation of the Uniform Mediation Act and the Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators, and many other state and national initiatives.  “Wheeler is the ‘Local Rock Star’ in mediation,” Ranard said, “and our Chapter members were given a backstage, up-close and personal visit with him."

Key feedback about the quality of this event verses other venues, such as online PDU trainings, was provided by Ranard as well as event participants. Their assessment:

  • The size of classes was perfect for one-on-one attention from Mr. Wheeler
  • The course directly impacts specific work needs.
  • The personal interaction with local peers helps with learning


Ranard said that she only wished that more understood what they could have reaped from this great and unique opportunity.

The second home run of the summer was the networking event held at Old Scratch Pizza in Dayton on Aug. 15th. For the participants running the bases at this event, “first base” was that it was ‘FREE’ to attend. “Second base” was the food was great. “Third base” was there large number of members in attendance. And “home plate” was the connections made on many levels with peers and career support.  In fact, watch this video to hear more from our Chapter member - Jose Rangel - about his PMI Dayton experiences. Professional Development

Beginning March 26, 2018, the PMP exam will reflect content from the PMBOK®Guide – Sixth Edition.  Exams administered before March 26, 2018 reflect PMBOK® Guide – Fifth Edition. On March 26, 2018, the PMI-ACP exam will also update to reflect the new Agile Practice Guide.  Updated information for the CAPM and other exams will be shared in upcoming PMI Global Friday Facts and on the PMI Update Center.

PMI Dayton has an upcoming PMP Certification course that is starting on October 7, 2017.  35 hours of class time will be taught over five Saturdays 8:00 to 4:00 PM - October 7,14,21,28 and Nov. 4.  The fee for this course is $750 for PMI Dayton Chapter members and $850 for non-Dayton Chapter members.  The price includes: 1) Tuition for 5 full days of training; 2) Copies of PMBOK® Fifth Edition & Rita Mulcahy’s PMP Exam Prep Book; 3) Study Aids; and 4) Food (Lunch and snacks)

Prior to founding S2A, Brad served as the chief financial officer and vice president of corporate strategy for a defense and aerospace contract manufacturing firm. There he managed the firm’s $100M+ project portfolio and successfully turned around the company’s performance on complex Department of Defense projects.

Friday Afternoon Keynote Speaker: Leading in Challenging Times – John P Hart

John is a serial entrepreneur that created his first business when he was in 7th grade, John’s Woodshop selling maple cutting boards and hardwood products to Cracker Barrel stores.  Upon graduation from High School he enlisted into the United States Army spending the next 22 years serving within Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard units.  He retired highly decorated as an E-8 First Sergeant from the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne). For the past 26 years John, has been the Chairman and CEO of Cincinnati Headquartered Corporation which is an International Pre-Employment Screening Service company providing more than 3 million background checks each year. He is also the founder of Start Skydiving which has become the number one skydiving center in the world located in Middletown, Ohio. He is an active Alumnus from the University of Cincinnati School of Business, married to his wife Suzanne for more than 35 years and the fathers of three Sons.

Saturday - Project Everest – Essential Steps for Successful Projects –Alan Mallory
