In Case You Missed It - Summer Events Recap

The summer was a time of home runs in education and networking for the Dayton PMI Chapter. All of you who could attend were a part of really knocking the ball out of the park.

First, the Chapter was honored to have Terry Wheeler as a presenter for a two-part event, ‘Advance Your Career with Strategies and Skills to Manage Workplace Conflicts”.

Wheeler is a partner of the law firm of Artz, Dewhirst & Wheeler but, according to Deb Ranard, the Dayton PMI Chapter VP of Professional Development, his involvement with dispute resolution at Capital University Law School, serving as Co-Director of the Center for Dispute Resolution, Academic Director for the Mediation and Dispute Resolution Program, as well as an Adjunct Professor of Law teaching negotiation, mediation and mediation clinic really make him a ‘class act trainer’.

A former president of the board at the Association for Conflict Resolution, in Washington, DC, Wheeler has been mediating for 34 years. During that time, he had been an active participant in the creation of the Uniform Mediation Act and the Model Standards of Conduct for Mediators, and many other state and national initiatives.  “Wheeler is the ‘Local Rock Star’ in mediation,” Ranard said, “and our Chapter members were given a backstage, up-close and personal visit with him."

Key feedback about the quality of this event verses other venues, such as online PDU trainings, was provided by Ranard as well as event participants. Their assessment:

  • The size of classes was perfect for one-on-one attention from Mr. Wheeler
  • The course directly impacts specific work needs.
  • The personal interaction with local peers helps with learning

Ranard said that she only wished that more understood what they could have reaped from this great and unique opportunity.

If circumstances kept you from this event make sure and mark your calendar for Nov. 3 and 4, to be first on board for the upcoming, high-quality Fall Summit. If you have any questions about it, please contact Sri Pasupuleti at summit@daytonpmi.org or Deb Ranard at professionaldevelopment@daytonpmi.org.

The second home run of the summer was the networking event held at Old Scratch Pizza in Dayton on Aug. 15th. For the participants running the bases at this event, “first base” was that it was ‘FREE’ to attend. “Second base” was the food was great. “Third base” was there large number of members in attendance. And “home plate” was the connections made on many levels with peers and career support.  In fact, watch this video to hear more from our Chapter member - Jose Rangel - about his PMI Dayton experiences. If you couldn’t make it this time, make sure you get there next time.  You can read more about all of our upcoming events at daytonpmi.org.

The Dayton Chapter of PMI is your opportunity to grow and shine.  A special thanks to each of you for your part in helping all of us have a great experience together!

Friday Morning Keynote: The Silent Killer of Project Management Effectiveness - Brad Brezinski

Brad founded S2A in 2014 with a simple mission: Develop 10 Percenters! A concept based on the fact that fewer than 10% of people say they understand their company’s strategy and its connection to their daily work. Through his workshops, seminars and strategy coaching, Brad chips away at the divide from both sides by helping the C-suite set a clear, concise and compelling strategic direction, while helping project managers make sense of the company's strategy in an actionable way. Prior to founding S2A, Brad served as the chief financial officer and vice president of corporate strategy for a defense and aerospace contract manufacturing firm. There he managed the firm’s $100M+ project portfolio and successfully turned around the company’s performance on complex Department of Defense projects.

Living and working abroad has given Alan the opportunity to deepen his understanding of individual and team challenges, better appreciate cultural diversity and successfully adapt to different organizational structures. The two-month expedition to the top of the world’s highest peak is a journey filled with unparalleled physical and mental challenges through some of the most extreme conditions imaginable.
